After a last minute 6-3 victory by the Jaguars over the Willamette Valley Raiders during the regular season, the Raiders made the trip to Death Valley feeling extremely confident in their ability to dethrone the defending two time NWFL Champion, King County Jaguars. This was the first time these two teams have met in a playoff situation. The weather conditions were perfect and the scene was set for another unforgettable Jaguar vs. Raider battle. The Raiders won the coin toss but their hopes slowly faded as the Jaguars schooled them what a true championship team can do. The first quarter was a tight defensive battle with Jaguar Kicker Mike Astley drawing first blood with 34 yard field goal taking the lead 3-0. In the second quarter the Jaguars strike again when QB James Phillips finds WR Anthony Montgomery for 24 yard touchdown in the corner of the end zone and the Jaguars jump to a 10-0 lead. Later in the second quarter Kicker Mike Astley boots a 41 yard field goal and the Jaguars go in at the half leading 16-0. Early in the third quarter, Astley cranks out a 45 yard field goal and the Jaguars begin to pull away; leaving the Raiders to doubt that an upset over the Jaguars would be possible. It was in the third quarter that the Jaguars drove home the death blow when RB Nathan (Tank) Proctor ran through a tremendous hole created by the Jaguars offensive line. Proctor rambled down field shedding tackles, knocking down Raiders, (even carrying some Raiders), at one point going “Hover Tank” as he leapt over a Raider defender; finally getting knocked out of bounds at the Raiders 4 yard line for a 56 yard run. Tank then took the hand off and scored on the next possession giving the Jaguars a 23-0 lead. Desperate to get on the score board the Raiders moved into shotgun formation. The Raiders elusive QB, David Littleton, who had been on the run all evening from a strong Jaguars pass rush, threw the ball into the hands of Jaguar DB Jeremiah (Cap) Captain who raced strait down the right side for a 52 yard interception return and a touchdown. The Jaguars lead 30-0 at the end of the third quarter. The Raiders one and only score of the night was in the fourth quarter on a 35 yard TD to #3 from #0. On defense, the Jaguars were lead by Defensive Lineman Terrance Stitt with 5 tackles, 2 sacks and an interception. Jaguars Linebackers Robert Brown and Dion Alexander each had 4 tackles a piece. Next week the Jaguars take on the Oregon Thunderbolts for the NWFL Championship and round two of the NAFL playoffs. |
