It was a confident Oregon Thunderbolts team that arrived in ‘Death Valley’ to play the King County Jaguars for the 2007 Northwest Football League (NWFL) Championship Title. It was a very different team that left ‘Death Valley’ later that night. The Thunderbolts had high hopes that this meeting was going to be very different then their last regular season meeting with the Jaguars, when the Jaguars won 28-7. The Thunderbolts came into this game riding high on a four game winning streak, with two of those four wins coming from victories over the NWFL #2 seeded Seattle Stallions. Unfortunately for the Thunderbolts the two time defending NWFL Champion King County Jaguars had other plans. The Jaguars unleashed their extraordinary defense and executed solid special teams play, shocking the Oregon Thunderbolts with a 34-0 championship shutout. The game started off as a defensive struggle, until late in the first quarter when the Thunderbolts were forced to punt from their own 19 yard line. That was when Jaguar DE Shawn Corbett raced in and blocked the Thunderbolt punt causing the ball to bounce up and into Jaguar LB Willie ‘the hitstick’ Stewart’s hands who then ran it down to the T-Bolt’s 7 yard line. The Jaguars first score came when QB James Phillips connected with WR Carlos Clark down the middle in the back of the end zone and the Jaguars took a 7-0 lead. In the 2nd Quarter, Thunderbolt QB Matt Davidow muffed a handoff to his running back which left the football lying on the turf. Jaguar DE Terrance Stitt scooped up the ball and raced down field for a 26 yard touchdown and Jaguars went up 14-0. Davidow, who attempted to make the tackle on Stitt, was injured and did not return to the field for the rest of the game. The Jaguars struck again late in the 2nd quarter when QB Phillips hit WR Anthony Montgomery for a 33 yard touchdown. The Jaguars lead big at the half, 21-0. The Jaguars defense held tough in the 3rd quarter and the Thunderbolts were forced to punt from their own 34 yard line. The punt snap sailed right over the punters head and into the end zone. The T-Bolts punter tried to kick the ball out of the end zone but missed, and Jaguar DB Deno Williams pounced on the ball for another Jaguar touchdown. Jaguars lead grows to 28-0. Jaguar special teams took advantage one more time in the 4th quarter when PR Milton Myers caught the punt and darted down field, shaking T-Bolt defenders as he went, for a 48 yard Jaguar touchdown. NWFL Commissioner Ron Baines was on hand to present the 2007 NWFL trophy to Head Coach Jeff Scott and the King County Jaguars. Other game awards: The 2007 NWFL Championship game MVP trophy was presented to: Jaguar LB Dion Alexander, Offensive game MVP went to Jaguar WR Carlos Clark, Defensive game MVP went to DE Terrance Stitt and Special teams’ game MVP went to Jaguar Kicker Mike Astley. T-Bolts player of the game trophy went to: MLB Keti Taufoou. The King County Jaguars have won the NWFL title for the 3rd straight year. This Jaguar victory also counted as a North American Football League (NAFL) national playoff victory and the Jaguars move on to round 3 of the NAFL playoffs and set their sights on the NAFL National Championship. The King County Jaguars next big game is Saturday September 29th at Auburn Memorial Stadium against the undefeated Blue Mountain Stars (12-0) of Tri-Cities WA for the Minor League Football Association (MLFA) West National Championship and for bragging rights as the best football team in the entire Northwest. Your King County Jaguars are currently ranked #1 in the NAFL National Power Rankings. |
